A Division II Women's Collegiate Conference
Showing a strong commitment to furthering the sport of rugby in the United States since the program’s inception, the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College are one of just five women’s collegiate “varsity” programs in the nation. Deciding to move away from NERFU and assist in the formation of NESC Rugby seemed to the team’s Head Coach, MaryBeth Mathews, the next logical step in advocating for women’s rugby in the northeast. Mathews sees the move as an opportunity to garner institutional support for rugby at other member institutions and for the small liberal arts colleges of New England to build a future catering to their respective needs.
As for the Polar Bears squad itself, the women have made several appearances in the New England Rugby Football Union playoffs, winning back-to-back championships in 1995 and 1996 and qualifying for post-season play in 15 consecutive years at the Division II level. In April of 2007, they saw their most successful run, earning a bid to the National Championship “Elite Eight”. The Polar Bears have also groomed three USA Rugby All-Americans and one USA Eagle. The NESCRC welcomes them as a new and positive addition to the conference!
